THE IDEA
According to the Center for American Progress, 74% of communities of color live in nature-deprived areas. But access is only half the story. Paintings of exploration in museums typically only depict white men, shaping how society pictures the outdoors and who belongs in it.
So Chicago Voyagers, a nonprofit that empowers youth from Chicago’s most underserved communities through outdoor adventure therapy, challenged history by partnering with diverse local artists to paint the future of exploration: one where adventure knows no gender or color.
To drive awareness for the cause, Chicago Voyagers launched the Future Voyagers Exhibit featuring artworks from Chicago artists depicting portraits of CV youth, painted in heroic poses of exploration. The program included an art auction, residency open to the public, community events hosted by minority-owned businesses, speaker panels, out-of-home on Chicago’s largest building, and an interactive audio tour.
